RBI Reed Business International are an international publishing company who own and run a wide range of magazines and websites focusing on industry. One such industry is farming which is covered by the Farmers Weekly magazine.
The Farmers Weekly publication provides news, information and advice to farmers throughout the UK. One of the most popular and commonly used features of the site is the Market Prices section where the varying market prices for arable produce and livestock are listed and updated daily. Not only does this information give the farmer a guide on how much to sell their produce for at market, but also gives an insight into which produce is fetching the highest prices and will be in more demand the following season.
Prices for goods arrive at FWI in a data stream and were fed into software which created PDF sheets. These sheets were uploaded to the FWI site for readers to download. It was decided that it would be better if the data was fed directly into the site and presented within web pages through a series of responsive, html tables.
The first stage of the project was to examine and understand the feeds. Feeds arrived from multiple sources in varying formats offering a range of information which meant that one table layout was not going to work for all feeds.
Each table was carefully planned to work in several locations within the site and to respond across all devices. Test tables were created which enabled the creation of series of wireframe layout diagrams that were used for discussion and further development.
Once all the technicalities of delivering the data were decided, the next step was to create visual mock up designs, carefully ensuring that the strict brand guidelines and existing icons and graphic elements were utilised.
After several rounds of tweaks and amendments, the next step was to produce pixel perfect PSD files to pass over to the development team at FWI.
